Abdel Elah Al Arab

Calligrapher · Bahrain
Abdel Elah Al Arab

Abdul Elah Al Arab is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Arabic calligraphy in the Kingdom of Bahrain. A student of the renowned Egyptian calligrapher Sayed Ebrahim, he holds a Diploma in Arabic Calligraphy with specialization in letter formation, composition, and ornamentation. In 1983, he was among the founding members of the Bahrain Arts Society, playing a key role in shaping the country’s artistic landscape. Building on over fifteen years of experience, he later established Bahrain’s first school dedicated to Arabic calligraphy in 1990.

Al Arab was officially commissioned in 1973 to produce a handwritten copy of the Constitution of the State of Bahrain, in addition to designing the state’s honorary medals at the time. Among his most celebrated works is The “Ha’a” Formation, which received the Judges’ Award at the 3rd International Cairo Biennale of Fine Arts.

His calligraphic practice is deeply rooted in the discipline’s classical principles, adhering closely to its rules, proportions, and historical traditions. While his work is distinguished by precision and refinement, it also conveys a profound sensitivity to the expressive and poetic qualities of the Arabic letter.

Today, in his sixth decade, Abdul Elah Al Arab remains a prominent figure in Bahrain’s cultural scene. His legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists, and his enduring contribution has left a lasting imprint on the Kingdom’s artistic and cultural heritage.
